Hunting season will soon be here and for those who do hunt (and we know this is a big sporting tradition, especially in Virginia and West Virginia), we thought we should mention these two important dangerous product recalls:
1) Rivers Edge has recalled 14,000 of its Hunters Tree Stands, due to a fall hazard. The snap-hook assemblies can fail causing the tree stand (and the user) to fall to the ground. Rivers Edge has already received three reports of incidents of the snap-hook assemblies failing, including injuries.
The tree stands are called Big Foot, Lite Foot and Baby Big Foot tree stands, used for both bow and rifle hunting. Recalled models bear the date “2012” on a round ID tag on the crossbar beneath the seat. They do not have an orange dot or an “X” stamped on the snap-hook. The models also include Big Foot with Footrest, Big Foot XL with Footrest, Big Foot XL with Fast Sticks, and Big Foot XL Lounger. They were manufactured in China. The tree stands were sold for between $39 and $120 at Blain’s Farm and Fleet, Gander Mountain, Mills Fleet Farm, Orscheln Farm & Home, Rogers Sporting Goods, Scheels All Sports and other sporting goods stores throughout the country from May 1, 2012 through September 1, 2012. Consumers can contact Rivers Edge toll free by calling 1-866-527-9690 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, to arrange to receive a free replacement snap-hook assembly.
2) HatsanUSA has recalled 2,400 of its Striker Air Rifles due to injury hazard, because the rifle can fire unexpectedly. Most would consider the latter a serious design defect.
The air rifles were manufactured by Hatsan Arms Company of Turkey and shoot pellets. They were sold in three styles: black with a gray forearm grip and gray rear grip; camouflage with a black forearm grip and black rear grip; and brown hardwood with cross hatching cut into the forearm grip and rear grip. The rifles measure 43 inches long and have a black scope and front and rear sights. “Striker” is printed on the top of the gun’s barrel behind the rear sight. Serial numbers of the recalled air rifles begin with: 0511, 0811, 0911, 1011, 0112, 0212, 0312 or 0412. The serials are printed on the air rifle’s barrel block.
The rifles were sold by Dunham’s Sports, Sportsman’s Warehouse, and other sporting goods stores and gun shops nationwide, and through catalog and online sales, from November 2011 through July 2012 for from $100 to $130. Consumers should stop using the recalled air rifles immediately. Unload them and contact HatsanUSA for a free replacement.
