According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Volkswagen is recalling approximately 790,000 vehicles because of defective break lights.

The vehicles included in the recall, in the United States, are New Beetles, Jettas, Golf/GTIs and R32s, which also include the 4th generation 1999-2005 Jetta Sedans, 2001-2005 Jetta Wagons, 1998-2007 New Beatle 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertible.

The defect is malfunctioning break lights and break light switches that do not work properly at times and at other times remain on when they should be turned off.

This recall expands on a previous recall that was announced by Volkswagen last year when 362,000 New Beetles and Jettas were recalled because of the same defective parts.

Volkswagen does not plan to start notifying owners until April; however, they will immediately be accepting service appointments to repair the problem at no charge.
