Recently, there has been controversy over the use of tasers. Constable Victor Trevino in Texas banned his deputies from using tasers after reading a manufactuer’s report that the device could cause heart troubles if fired into the chest, as described in this article.
He has elected to wait for legal advice before making any further decisions, a smart move considering the tremendous responsiblility of being the cause of a single heart attack.
Other law enforcement officials are not as concerned because they train their officers to use tasers in large muscle areas, such as the back, or below the sternum, in order to avoid heart issues. Clearly more research on the link between heart problems and taser needs to take place to protect citizens. Since tasers have prevented injuries both to law enforcements officers and civilians, the risks and benefits of taser use need to be carefully weighed.
