The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with manufacturer Regent Sports Corporation, has issued a voluntary recall for about 190,000 models of MacGregor Folding Soccer Goals and Mitre Folding Soccer Goals. These goals were sold for $26 at Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware and other sports and toy stores from May 2002 to May 2008. Both soccer goals have a foldable white frame with a white net that is attached to the frame by Velcro strips. The MacGregor goal stands at six feet wide by three feet high and the Mitre net measures 8 feet wide by 6 feet high. The MacGregor soccer goal has model number 97236 printed on the assembly instructions and UPC code number 029807972365 printed on the net’s packaging. The Mitre soccer goal has model number 89186 printed on the assembly instructions and UPC code number 029807891864 printed on the net’s packaging. Nets manufactured after April 2007 with four inch by four inch square openings are not included in the recall.

These goals pose a significant safety hazard due to the fixed knot flexible openings in the goal’s net that can serve as a strangulation hazard to young children. So far, the manufacturer and the CPSC have received two reports of head entanglement; one of these was the strangulation death of a twenty-month-old child who was found with his arm and neck entangled in the net. Consumers are asked to stop using the products immediately and send the nets to Regent Sports to receive a free replacement net. For additional information, you may contact Regent Sports at (877) 516-9707 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
