A potentially dangerous toy was recently recalled just before Christmas. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Sassy Inc. of Kentwood, Michigan, have announced a voluntary recall of approximately 45,300 Hug and Tug Puppy toys sold in retail stores throughout the country and online from July 2012 through October 2012. The beads these toys can release may pose a choking hazard to babies and young children. The toys were manufactured in China and imported to the U.S. by Sassy Inc.

Beads located inside a clear plastic ball at the center of the toys can be released when children play with the toy. Sassy Inc. has already received 12 reports of beads being released from the clear plastic sphere of the toy’s “body”. No reports have been issued with reference to a similar toy possessing the Carter’s® brand. No injuries have been reported with either toy. The12” tall, colorful toys for babies can be attached to strollers or car seats using a ring attached to the toy’s head. The toys’ faces resemble either a monkey or a puppy.

Toys affected by this recall include the Sassy Hug N’Tug Puppy, model 80213, Sassy Hug N’Tug Monkey, model 80214, Carter’s branded Hug N’Tug Monkey, models 61083 (sold on a blue packaging card) and 61540 sold on a grey packaging card. Sassy® branded toys have “Sassy®” on the label sewn on the back of the character’s head. The Carter’s® toys have “Carter’s®” written in red on a blue plastic ring connected to the toy’s head and also on the label sewn to the back of the character’s head. The Sassy-branded toys sold for approximately $8, while the Carter’s branded toys sold for $14.

Parents and caregivers should remove these toys from their children’s access immediately and contact Sassy Inc. to return and receive a replacement toy. Sassy Inc. can be reached by telephone on 1(800)323-6336 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, or consumers may visit the company’s website at www.sassybaby.com and click on the Product Recall Information link.
