The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced that BatteriesPlus, LLC, of Hartland, Wisconsin, is recalling approximately 111,800 Rayovac NI-CD Cordless Tool Replacement Battery Packs, due to the danger of explosion and injury. As of December 21st, BatteriesPlus had received five reports of explosions without injuries.
According to the CPSC recall announcement, the recall involves RAYOVAC-branded replacement battery packs used with cordless power tools. "RAYOVAC," "NI-CD" and a part number beginning with "CTL" are printed in white lettering on the product.
The voltage of the battery packs sold ranged between 2.4 and 18 volts, and the packs came in various sizes and shapes. They were sold as replacement batteries to Black & Decker, Bosch, DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Panasonic, Ryobi and Skil brand tools.
The replacement battery packs, manufactured in China, were sold at BatteriesPlus stores throughout the country between June 2008 and October 2011 for about $60. This is yet another example of a Chinese product going bad. One day, maybe manufacturers will move their plants back to the Untied States, as the expense of recalls and unsafe products may outweigh any higher costs of make products at home.
