Ford Motor Company recalled more than 500,000 Escape small SUV’s after reports of 50 Escape engine fires.

The Fires were reportedly caused by corroded brake parts in the Escapes’ antilock brake systems. The recall covered 2001 through 2004 model years, and it came after an investigation by the Natioinal Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last year (2006). Owners will not be charged for the replacement of the antilock braking system component. There was no indication in the New York Times article as to whether any of the fires had resulted in personal injury to any owners or occupants of the SUV’s.
