In the past several months more than 2 million dangerous or "violative" toys and children’s products have been seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum and Deputy Commissioner David Aguilar of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
CPSC Investigators and CPB inspectors have pooled their efforts in U.S. ports to reduce the threat of bad toys reaching the shelves and being purchased for children this holiday season. According to a recent MSNBC.com article, during the past four years working together, the agencies have halted more than 8.5 million units of 2,400 different toys and children’s products due to safety hazards or the failure of those products and toys to meet federal safety standards, such as lead paint content, etc.
Federal officials Tenenbaum and Aguilar continue to remind parents to "remain vigilant" when it comes to buying toys for their children this season and to purchase only toys they believe to be safe.
I am glad someone is attempting to police these Bad Santa's, but I suspect that many more of these dangerous toys are making it through. Hopefully, there are not too many ticking time-bombs out there. Unfortunately, the "profits over safety" mantra applies to many manufacturers of children's products too, with no apparent discrimination.
