The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a voluntary recall of approximately 8,400 baby joggers in the U.S., and 2,200 in Canada, by Baby Jogger LLC, of Richmond, Virginia. The jogging strollers were made in China and imported to the U.S. by Baby Jogger LLC, and the stroller’s frame can fail to lock in place, causing the stroller to collapse while being used and posing a fall hazard to children in the stroller—as well as the jogger pushing the stroller. Baby Jogger LLC has received six reports of incidents having occurred where the stroller frame did not lock properly. No injuries have been reported to date.

The recall affects all Baby Jogger City Versa™ Strollers manufactured between May 15 and August 20, 2012. The manufacturing dates can be located on a black plastic side hinge which appears below the label "Baby Jogger" and "City Versa". "City Versa" is also printed on the stroller’s fabric below the seat. The strollers with fabric seats and canopies have charcoal-colored metal frames and fabric in colors black, silver, red or green.

The strollers were sold by BuyBuyBaby and other children’s product retailers throughout the country, as well as by online stores including buybuybaby.com, albeebaby.com, diapers.com and other online stores from July through October 2012, for approximately $450.

The CPSC notice encourages consumers to contact the company to arrange to receive a free replacement frame for the stroller—but if I were a parent who spent $450 and thought had to replace the frame, I would request to return the stroller for a full refund. The company, Baby Jogger LLC, can be contacted toll free at 1(877)506-2213 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time Monday through Friday. Consumers may also visit the company’s website to obtain additional information about this recall, at www.babyjogger.com
