Feds Say That Too Many Energy Drinks Interfere with… Wakefulness

Comments Off

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), a new study has been published which indicates energy drinks that contain caffeine equivalent to three cups of regular coffee can have a startling effect on a person’s ability to remain awake. Yes, you read that correct – awake.

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research study analyzing data gathered from U.S. service members in Afghanistan shows that service members who consumed at least three energy drinks per day “reported falling asleep more often on guard duty and in briefings” than service members who consumed less. The study was reported in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USCDC). http://www.hhs.gov/news/healthbeat/2013/01/20130110a.html

CDC’s Dr. Robin Toblin suggests people use the so-called “energy” drinks in moderation and keep in mind that the number of drinks consumed and size of the drink container, which can range from 8 to 24 ounces, can affect wakefulness. Has anyone reading this actually experienced this reverse effect?
