St. Jude Medical Recalls Pain Management Batteries

St. Jude Medical (SJM) on July 31, 2012, alerted doctors and patients that SJM was recalling some of its Eon and Eon Mini pain management implants.[1] SJM received more than 300 reports of batteries overheating and at least 70 cases in which the neurostimulation devices required removal when their batteries failed prematurely or due to the batteries overheating during the recharging process.

Several device patients received first or second-degree burns due to the medical device’s batteries overheating. Problems were also caused by the Eon Mini’s battery weld, which required a number of explanations. …

Patients requiring pain management provided by SJM’s Eon and Eon Mini batteries are urged to contact their physicians if they have questions or they may contact the company for additional information. The toll free number for St. Jude Medical Inc. (not to be confused with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital) is 800.328.9634.
