Toyota Recalls 17,000 Lexus Hybrids

Comments Off

Toyota is in the news again for a recall. This time it has issued a recall of 17,000 Lexus HS 250h hybrid sedans, and has halted further production on the model after government testing found that the vehicles could leak fuel after a rear-end impact. The hazard here is that the fuel leak could lead to a potential fire. A solution to the problem has yet to be found.

The recall is notable in that Toyota missed the defect in its own internal testing. However, once crash tests were completed by government contractor Calspan Corp. for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was discovered that rear-end collisions from a barrier at 50 miles per hour could cause fuel to leak from the vehicle. In these tests, over 142 grams of fuel spilled, he maximum amount allowed under federal safety rules.

Toyota will attempt to recreate the conditions of the Calspan crash tests in order to find the source of the defect and to find a remedy.

This is a potential safety defect. Please contact your local Lexus dealer about this recall as soon as possible.
