Shhh! Recall of Kids’ Probiotic Digestive Health Product

Comments Off

This is an unusual recall. On July 10, 2012, the FDA announced a voluntary recall of a probiotic product made for children’s digestive health, called iFlora® Kids because of "possible health risk." Sedona Labs is the manufacturer and from its website, Nutri-Health, LLC, appears to be the distributor. Nutri-Health, LLC, has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating. The product was distributed to customers from March 16, 2011 through May 3, 2012, and the product marketed via direct-mail and online to customers (physicians, clinics, pharmacies and individuals– parents for their children) was recalled on July 10, 2012, due to the possibility it was contaminated with Salmonella. No known illnesses have resulted from the possible contamination to-date.

On both the Sedona and Nutri-Health, LLC, websites, there is currently no mention of a recall or of the iFlora® Kids probiotic product, although there are several other probiotic products offered. There is the usual disclaimer that the FDA has not evaluated any of the statements the companies make about their products. Each website has a press room page, so one wonders why there is no mention of the recall of the children’s digestive health product considering that, in accordance with the recall notice, "Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Even healthy people infected with Salmonella can experience the uncomfortable symptoms of fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Salmonella can also make its way into the bloodstream and cause other serious illnesses, so it is nothing to take lightly in children or adults.

This seems to be another instance of dietary supplement manufacturers slip-sliding away, quietly. Yes, the product has been recalled, voluntarily… and quietly.
