Infant Deaths Lead to Major Stroller Recall

Comments Off

After receiving 4 reports of death, the CPSC and Graco Children’s Products, Inc., have recalled approximately 2 million strollers due to infant strangulation. The deaths occurred from 2003 through 2005, and involved Graco Quattro Tour and MetroLite model strollers. The recall notes that infants can get their heads trapped between the stroller tray and the seat bottom, leading to suffocation. The defect affects infants under a year old, especially. The recall affects all Quattro Tour strollers manufacture and sold before November 2006, and all MetroLite strollers manufactured and sol before July 2007. The CPSC stated that the strollers can still be safely used as car seats because the car-seat-setup eliminates the space gap that would otherwise endanger the child.

Consumers are advised to discontinue use of the strollers and contact Graco at 1-877-828-4046, to obtain a free repair kit.

This writer’s questions are these: why are these strollers just now being recalled when these deaths took place 5 and 7 years ago? Why were they not recalled in 2003? There should be zero tolerance for defects endangering lives. I applaud the recall, but it may have been too late for some of these families.
