Hyundai Recalls 139,500 2011 Sonatas

Comments Off

After 8 reports of steering failure, Hyundai has issued a similar recall to fellow automaker Mercedes-Benz by recalling 139,500 2011 Sonata sedans due to a steering defect.

The defect is caused by the "intermediate shaft universal joint connections [having] been either improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened." The defect can cause drivers to lose steering control and potentially crash their vehicles.

Vehicles recalled were manufactured at the Korean automaker’s Montgomery, Alabama plant from December 11 through September 10.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated last month that it was investigating reports that steering shafts in Sonatas were decoupling, causing "a complete loss of steering capability."
