Honda Recalls Over 800,000 SUVs and Minivans For Roll Aways

Comments Off

This past week it was announced that Honda will recall certain model year 2003 and 2004 Pilot and Odyssey and 2003 through 2006 Acura MDX passenger vehicles which were built from November 26, 2001 through August 30, 2006. due to the fact that in certain cases, when the ignition key is removed and the automatic transmission has not been shifted into park, the car can simply roll away. A total of 807,161 vehicles may be affected.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) safety campaign website, this defect is due to the fact that "the interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated". (Uhh, you mean "Fail"?) Of course, this defect increases the risk of a crash… without the ignition key in the switch or the car in park.

Honda intends to notify owners and will recommend they take their vehicles to their Honda or Acura dealers to have an updated shift interlock lever installed and possibly the ignition switch replaced.

The recall will begin on or about February 7, 2013. Honda owners may call the company for more information about this recall using their toll-free number 1(800)424-9153. Owners may wish to reference the recall campaign numbers S73 and S74.

This is a safety-related defect. Please have your Honda repaired by a qualified Honda service center.
