Honda Recalls 183,000 Vehicles Due to Brake Manfunctions

Comments Off

American Honda has announced plans to recall approximately 183,000 vehicles, including Hondas and Acuras, due to brake malfunctions. Honda believes the malfunctions may originate in the electronic Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) systems. Affected by this recall are 101,000 Honda Pilots, 60,000 Acura MDX SUVs and 21,000 Acura RL sedans, each of Model year 2005, and 800 2006 Model year Acura MDX SUVs.

The problems with the VSA system, which “selectively applies braking power to each of the four wheels when the computer detects a loss of traction,” could cause the vehicle to brake suddenly without input from the driver and increase the risk of a crash. Also, if the driver applied the brakes in addition to an unintended response from the VSA, the “amount of brake force could exceed the driver’s intended input”, also risking an accident.

Honda owners may contact American Honda, at 1(800)999-1009, and owners of Acuras may contact the company at 1(800)382-2239 for additional information on the recall.
