DePuy Brought Up On Criminal Charges… in Greece

Comments Off

Criminal corruption charges have been added to DePuy’s list of woes. The charges, including bribery and money laundering, were brought by Greek prosecutors "for deals that occurred from 1998 to 2006." The Associated Press recently reported in The Miami Herald that five DePuy officials, who may or may not still be employed by DePuy, were charged with bribery and money laundering.

DePuy, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, is being accused of having paid more than 16 million Euros (approximately $21.5) to Greek physicians to push DePuy’s products. The charges also involve at least eight orthopedic physicians working in Greek state hospitals.

Greece’s recent financial failures have been partially attributed to "extravagant healthcare spending," according to the AP. Meanwhile, the hits keep coming for DePuy, which is taking a pounding in a California trial over its recalled and defectively designed ASR hip implant system.
