54,000 “metoo” Table-Top Clip-On Chairs for Infants/Toddlers Recalled

Comments Off

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Phil&Teds USA, Inc. of Fort Collins, Colorado, recently announced a voluntary recall of 54,000 “metoo” Table-Top Clip-On Chairs, marketed for use by parents for infants and toddlers.

Phil&Teds USA Inc. and the CPSC have received 19 reports of the chairs falling from different table surfaces. Five reports of injuries were received in two of which children’s fingers were severely pinched, lacerated, crushed or amputated. There were also three reports involving bruising following sudden detachment of the Clip-On chair resulting in a child striking the table or floor.

In addition to the fact that CPSC considered the user instructions for the chairs inadequate, missing or worn clamp pads allow the chairs to detach from different table surfaces, posing a fall hazard. When the Table-Top Clip-On chair detaches, children’s fingers can become caught between the bar and clamp mechanism, posing an amputation hazard.

The Clip-On Chairs were manufactured in China, imported to the U.S. and sold at Buy Buy Baby, Target, Toys R Us and their online sites; philandteds.com; Amazon.com; other online retailers, and a variety of independent juvenile specialty stores from May 2006 to May 2011 for between $40 and $50.

Consumers will recognize the childhood furniture item as an infant/toddler chair with a nylon fabric seat and metal frame which clamps onto table surfaces with two metal clamps. The chair is sold in three fabric colors – red, black and navy. According to the CPSC, “Chairs subject to this recall do not have black plastic spacers between the cross bar and the clamps.”

Consumers should stop using this Table-Top Clip-On Chair for their children immediately and contact Phil&Teds USA Inc. to receive a repair kit and revised user instructions. Consumers may contact Phil&Teds at (855) 652-9019 or visit the company’s website at: www.philandteds.com/support

Another recall of products marketed by Phil&Teds was reported on ChildSafetyBlog.org on August 4, 2011: 8,500 Explorer and Hammerhead baby strollers (in the U.S. and Canada) due to a brake failure problem posing an injury to children. Eight incidents of brake failure were reported. The strollers were manufactured in and imported from China.
