450,000 Window Blinds Recalled Following the Death of a Child

Comments Off

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Blinds Xpress have announced a voluntary recall of more than 450,000 window blinds, following the strangulation death of a Livonia, Michigan, child in 2009, according to a U.S. News article of September 7, 2012.

The blinds recalled are 315,000 horizontal blinds without inner-cord stop devices and all 139,000 custom-made vertical blinds without cord tensioning devices that would normally attach to a wall or the floor—which would permit a child or pet to become unwittingly wrapped in the blind cord.

The blinds being recalled were manufactured in the United States and sold by various specialty stores in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana from January 1995 through December 2011, for from $16 to $380.

Consumers are urged to stop using the window blinds immediately and contact the Window Covering Safety Council by calling their toll-free telephone number, 1(800)506-4636 or by visiting their website, www.windowcoverings.org to request a free repair kit.

According to the CPSC, deaths, injuries, and property damage due to consumer product-related incidents and accidents cost the nation over $900 billion every year. But the life of a child is… priceless.
