Fire hazards are plaguing Ford and some other auto manufacturers. Now, Ford is recalling more than 70,000 Ford Escapes and an estimated 16,000 2013 model year Ford Fusions because the cars’ engines may overheat and catch fire. This is an unwanted option, and definitely a safety related defect.

The recall involves automobiles sold in the U.S. and Canada, including the Fusion SEL and SE models with 1.6 liter engines and the Escape SEL and SE models. Owners had reported problems and emergency warning lights advising possible engine overheating. The current overheating problem is separate and distinct from the earlier problem experienced with Ford 2013 Escapes due to coolant and fuel leaks.

While no injuries have yet been reported due to the Fords’ engines overheating, Ford is advising owners to contact their dealers as soon as possible. Plans for repair solutions are being formulated but have not yet been finalized. Owners are able to obtain "replacement" vehicles through their dealers, however, and owners will be notified when the repair solution is announced, according to a recent article on Slash Gear.com.
